about

New York electronic artist Sporting Life delivers the third and final instalment of his Slam Dunk EP series.

Following on from his R&S debut ’ 55 5’s, a 10 track mind-bending beat tape that bristled with promise and originality, Sporting Life AKA Eric Adiele returns to the label for a trio of EPs titled ’Slam Dunk’ that have been released over the last few months.

Comprised of ear-popping instrumentals, illustrious remixes / guest vox and even a range of apparel, ’Slam Dunk’ draws on Adiele's love for Takehiko Inoue’s massively popular manga series of the same name, and the stupendous grace, power and agility of the storied basketball greats. The aforementioned guests are drawn from Sport’s friends and contemporaries including Ratking’s Wiki, Actress, Dev Hynes, Evy Jane, Novelist and Galcher Lustwork who co-incidentally provide a fitting context as a prism within which to contextualise Adiele’s day-glo beat fantasies.

Slam Dunk III kicks off this closing chapter with ‘Nothing To Hide’, featuring dazzling guest performances by Wiki and Devonte Hynes of Blood Orange. Against Sport’s bitter-sweet backing of stumbling piano hiccups and busted drums Hynes’ dulcet vocal takes flight - gossamer tracings of regret and yearning, contrasting with Wiki’s powerful and dominating raps which twist the track into new and unexpected directions. 'Jumpball' switches up the mood - a lolloping lo-fi electro slowjam, fizzing like an unplugged cable. ‘Espy’ boasts drunken filter sweeps and stuttering percussive blasts from a malfunctioning rhythm box. Arch beat provocateur Dean Blunt provides a suitably oddball take with his 'Babyfather Honeytrap mix (for Shakilus) final VIP' - free associating sombre intonations from the man himself mix with field recordings of street encounters over a winsome harp melody and breathy backing vocals.
